How Industrial Switching Hubs Keep Production Lines Connected 24/7

Modern Indian factories are increasingly data-driven. PLCs, servo drives, HMIs, vision inspection cameras, barcode readers, SCADA systems, and IIoT sensors - all of them communicate over Ethernet. And all of that communication flows through one device that most engineers specify at the last minute: the network hub.

An undersized, poorly specified, or consumer-grade hub in an industrial environment creates problems that are frustratingly difficult to diagnose: intermittent communication faults, PLC timeout errors, spurious sensor triggers, SCADA data dropouts. Most of these problems trace back to a hub that wasn't rated for the operating temperature, lacked surge protection, or couldn't handle the network traffic of the connected devices.

MISUMI India's Industrial Switching Hubs - available in 100M (10/100 Mbps) and Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbps) economy series - are purpose-built for factory floor use. Steel alloy shell, IP40 rated, -40 C to 80 C operating range, 4 KV surge protection, DIN rail mounting, and anti-vibration rating of intensity 8.

This guide covers what to know, how to choose, and why the right industrial hub matters for your factory network.

Why Industrial Switching Hubs - Not Office Switches

A standard office or consumer Ethernet switch will work on a factory floor - until it doesn't. The failure modes of consumer-grade switches in industrial environments are well-documented and expensive: housing melts at temperatures the device wasn't rated for, surge events from nearby motor drives cause port failures or complete device failure, vibration from machinery loosens internal connections, and DIN rail mounting is absent.

What Makes a Switching Hub 'Industrial'

  • IP40 or higher protection rating - protects internal electronics from solid particle ingress (tools, wiring debris) in panel environments
  • Extended temperature range - MISUMI's hubs operate from -40 C to 80 C working and storage, covering all Indian industrial environments including foundries, outdoor enclosures, and cold-storage adjacent installations
  • Surge protection - built-in 4 KV surge protection at the worksite protects the hub and connected equipment from voltage transients generated by motor start/stop, contactor switching, and lightning events
  • Anti-static protection - 8 KV anti-static rating prevents electrostatic discharge damage in dry or dusty environments common in Indian manufacturing facilities
  • Steel alloy housing - provides mechanical rigidity and EMC shielding that consumer plastic-housed switches cannot match
  • DIN rail mounting - standard 35mm DIN rail installation means the hub sits securely in the electrical panel alongside PLCs, relays, and power supplies
  • Anti-vibration grade intensity 8 - withstands the mechanical vibration present near presses, compressors, and heavy machine tools

Quick Selection Guide

Match your factory network requirement to the right MISUMI hub:

If your factory network needs... Choose
Basic device connectivity - PLCs, sensors, HMIs, drives 100M Series (MES-M5RJ-ST or M8RJ-ST)
High-speed data - vision cameras, industrial PCs, IIoT gateways Gigabit Series (MES-G5RJ-ST or G8RJ-ST)
Large factory floor with many nodes 16-port: MES-M16RJ-ST or MES-G16RJ-ST
Harsh industrial environment, vibration, temperature extremes Both series - IP40, -40 C to 80 C, vibration intensity 8
DIN rail cabinet mounting Both series - DIN rail mount as standard
Protection against electrical surges at the worksite Both series - 4 KV surge, 8 KV anti-static
EtherCAT or CC-Link IE fieldbus topology Use with compatible CAT5e cables from MISUMI
Cost-sensitive IIoT deployment Economy Series - both 100M and Gigabit are economy-priced

Installation - DIN Rail Mounting

Both the 100M and Gigabit series mount directly onto a standard 35 mm DIN rail - the same rail used for PLCs, circuit breakers, relays, and power supplies in industrial electrical panels.

The mounting process:

  • Step 1: Hook the top of the hub housing onto the DIN rail
  • Step 2: Snap the bottom clip down until it clicks into place
  • Step 3: Connect the DC 12-52V power supply via terminal block wire connection (wire size: 6-12 mm sq)
  • Step 4: Connect Ethernet cables (CAT5e recommended) to each device port
  • Step 5: Power on - no configuration required

⚠️ Warning Important: PoE Not Supported

MISUMI's industrial switching hubs do not support Power over Ethernet (PoE). Connected devices must have their own power supply - cameras, sensors, and access points that require PoE power through the Ethernet cable cannot be powered from these hubs.

If PoE is required, a PoE-capable industrial switch must be used.

Applications - Where MISUMI Industrial Hubs Are Used in Indian Factories

  • PLC-to-HMI communication - connecting operator panels, touch screens, and supervisory PCs to the main PLC network
  • Multi-axis servo drive communication - EtherCAT and PROFINET topologies connecting servo drives and the motion controller
  • Industrial vision systems - connecting machine vision cameras (gigabit series recommended for camera data bandwidth)
  • SCADA and data acquisition - connecting process sensors, flow meters, and analysers to the SCADA network
  • IIoT gateways and edge computing - gigabit series for high-bandwidth data from factory floor to cloud platforms
  • Distributed I/O networks - connecting remote I/O blocks, field panels, and instrumentation across the factory floor
  • Electrical panel networking - multiple PLCs, drives, and control devices in a single panel sharing a network switch
  • Outdoor and mobile machinery - wide temperature range suits summer outdoor installations and heated/cooled process areas

Reliable Networking Is the Foundation of Reliable Automation

Every PLC timeout, every SCADA dropout, every communication fault that causes a false machine stop - these are often symptoms of inadequate network infrastructure. Replacing a consumer switch with a properly rated industrial hub addresses the root cause: a device that was never designed for the environment it was installed in.

MISUMI India's Industrial Switching Hubs - 100M and Gigabit series, 5 to 16 ports - are built for Indian factory floors. Steel alloy housing, DIN rail mounting, -40 C to 80 C range, 4 KV surge protection, and economy pricing.

Specify the right hub for your panel and your network runs reliably from day one.
