Dowel Pins, Spring Pins, Stepped Pins

It is used as a positioning part. Some brands call it a dowel pin or straight pin, but there is no difference in the standards.
Standards are stipulated in JIS, and products designed according to both the new and old JIS standards are available. MISUMI offers products of both standards, so note the difference in tolerance.
Besides the dowel pin, MISUMI offers abundant shapes such as spring pin and stepped pin, as well as sizes from 0.1 to 30 mm and length from 2 to 200 mm. [Materials] > Stainless steel, iron (steel), resin
[Nominal Diameter] > 0.1 to 30 mm

Types of Dowel Pins

MISUMI offers a wide selection of shapes and styles, allowing engineers to choose the ideal pin for each mechanical requirement:

  • Straight Dowel Pins: The most commonly used alignment components, straight dowel pins ensure consistent, tight-fit positioning in fixed assemblies. They are vital for die sets, mold components, and jigs where repeatability and accuracy are paramount.
  • Stepped Dowel Pins: Also known as step dowels or stepped pins, these are designed with two distinct diameters. This configuration allows precise alignment between components with different hole sizes or directional clearance requirements. They’re widely used in tooling systems that demand controlled engagement and easy removal.
  • Spring Pins: Designed to provide flexibility and vibration resistance, spring pins feature a slotted, resilient structure that exerts outward pressure when installed. This makes them ideal for dynamic assemblies or environments subject to shock, movement, or thermal expansion.

Material Options

The choice of material significantly impacts performance, corrosion resistance, and load capacity. MISUMI offers dowel pins, spring pins, and stepped pins in multiple material options to suit diverse applications:

  • Stainless Steel: Excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength make it ideal for humid, chemical, or outdoor environments.
  • Iron (Steel): Provides outstanding tensile strength and hardness, making it suitable for high-load or high-precision mechanical assemblies.
  • Resin: Lightweight and non-conductive, resin pins are perfect for electronic equipment and low-stress positioning tasks where metal components may not be suitable.

These materials are available across a broad size range — nominal diameters from 0.1 mm to 30 mm and lengths from 2 mm to 200 mm — ensuring flexibility in both miniature precision assemblies and large-scale machinery.
