Rod is a basic material that is widely used in industrial factories. Such as used as the linear shaft in linear motion system with linear bush, used as rotation axis in rotation motion with bearing, used as machine structure, used as a pole for mounting device in the machine. Misumi had provided various materials types for rod products such as steel, carbide, stainless, brass, copper, aluminum, and titanium. Physical properties of a material are needed to be considered before selection such as stiffness, load allowable, flexibility, durability, and chemical resistance. Tolerance of standard parts is also important to consider during the designing process because using standard parts will save both cost and time compared with the custom part. Misumi had prepared several tolerances for rod products that suit most machines h7, g6, m6, and p6. Rods from Misumi can also be ordered by specific diameter and length, increment by 0.1mm, Max length is up to 1,000mm, and Max diameter is 80 mm.
Question: What are the common materials used for industrial rods?
Answer: The most common materials used for industrial rods include:
• Aluminum
• Brass
• Copper
• Titanium
• Carbon Steel
• Special Steel
• Stainless Steel
• Tool Steel
• Dies Steel
• Plastic (nylon, PVC, polypropylene)
• Composite materials
Question: What factors should be considered when choosing an industrial rod?
Answer: When selecting an industrial rod, consider the following factors:
• Strength and durability: The rod must be able to withstand the required loads and stresses.
• Corrosion resistance: If the rod will be exposed to corrosive environments, choose a material that is resistant to corrosion.
• Machinability: If the rod needs to be machined or modified, consider its machinability.
• Cost: The cost of the material and any necessary processing should be factored in.
Question: What are the common types of industrial rods?
Answer: Common types of rods include:
• Round Rods: Cylindrical in shape, used for general purposes.
• Square Rods: Four-sided rods often used in frameworks.
• Hexagonal Rods: Six-sided rods, typically used in fasteners or precision components.
• Threaded Rods: Rods with threading on the surface, used in fastening and assembly applications.
Question: What industries commonly use industrial rods?
Answer: • Construction: For reinforcement, scaffolding, and structural support.
• Automotive: In suspension components, axles, and other mechanical parts.
• Aerospace: For lightweight, high-strength components.
• Machinery: Shafts, fasteners, and various mechanical linkages.
• Electronics: Precision rods for connectors, terminals, and enclosures.
• Marine Industry: Corrosion-resistant rods for boat components and marine structures.
Question: What types of surface finishes and surface treatments are available for industrial rods?
Answer: Common surface finishes for industrial rods include:
• Galvanized: Zinc-coated to prevent rust and corrosion.
• Polished: Smoother and more aesthetically pleasing for decorative applications.
• Anodized: An electrolytic passivation process used to increase corrosion resistance and surface hardness, particularly for aluminum rods.
• Powder Coated: A protective coating applied to steel or other metal rods for enhanced durability and appearance.
Surface treatments
• Black Oxide
• Electroless Nickel Plating
