    Behind the Scenes of Product Development

    Technology development started in 2000, which is the basis of the long-distance stable sensing technology installed in E2E-NEXT. The proximity sensor housing with as small as ⌀3 cylindrical shape is available as one of the smallest, for which the parts that can be mounted inside the housing are limited, and the main circuit needs to be integrated using semiconductor process technology. Accordingly custom ICs are used.

    Custom ICs composed of analog circuits have been equipped, for conventional models.
    The digital correction technology, which is an important factor to achieve long-distance stable sensing which is the key to E2E-NEXT, has a large circuit scale and requires a fundamental review of the circuit design. Accordingly the manufacture decided to adopt a digital-analog hybrid IC with a built-in digital circuit that allows for micro wiring.
    The feature of this IC is that the oscillation amplitude of the proximity sensor can be digitally controlled and the adjustment amount for each sensor can be quantified and controlled.

    The sensing distance-temperature characteristics of the proximity sensor are affected by the temperature characteristics of the parts and the layout of the circuit, so optimization is required for each model.
    In addition, the correction amount of the sensing distance depends on the shape and position variation of the parts that make up the sensor, and the variation occurs.
    In the past, this correction was adjusted in the intermediate process of production, but this was a large error factor.
    Therefore, by writing the correction data of the sensing distance-temperature characteristics to the digital-to-analog hybrid IC using the manufacture's own communication means, the manufacture has achieved to perform correction in the final testing.

    One of the most difficult point in the development of this digital-to-analog hybrid IC is that it was necessary to define all the requirements and incorporate them as IC specifications, even for the specifications that were implicitly determined from the conditions that were obvious for conventional analog ICs and past experience. For points that were insufficient in terms of the condition setting and incorporation into the specifications, it was often necessary to readjust the schedule due to many problems occurred.
    By meeting the challenges without giving up, the manufacture has achieved one of the world's longest sensing distance* with a 2-wire proximity sensor.
